Reward for not spilling all the beans on Benghazi, perhaps. They bludgeoned Gen P with that affair they had been keeping in their pocket for a rainy day. But like a good boy, he played it cool, and is getting his reward. Then again maybe he's some financial wiz?

More likely its just a typical corporate move. Bring in people with influence or who can lend legitimacy to your company. It's not always what they know but who they know. Imagine the connections Petraeus has after that career. And people in other countries don't get so worked up over an affair like they do here.
