    Re: Pope Resigns

Although I don't favor conspiracy theories , the reasons of his resignation must be different and grave serious.

Apparently for health reasons, but plenty of popes have died in office. The last time one resigned was in the 15th century. So it certainly is curious.

My current operating theory is that he lent all the Vatican's money to Monte Paschi as part of a back door bailout of Italian sovereign debt. I have absolutely no evidence for this, but sometime you just have to let the spirit move you ;-)

Sounds like something Eggs Benedict would do. Good work

and other than that mildly interesting theory (ok, why not have another roman catholic conspiracy ;) - this bit of less than financially pertinent news is relevant to discussion here because?

Because the Catholic Church is one of the largest corporations (or equivalent) in the world?

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

well i guess thats one reason, if somewhat indirect...
but i'm sure the catholic bashers will have a ball with the news - likely it'll be blamed on more little boy stories... sad as that all is, i expect that 'revelation' will appear any moment, as we're overdue for the next BIG Distraction (since the blizzard will be over with the next rain)

I think the butler knows the real cause of the Pope's sudden resignation.

Why He stayed in so long?

Remember back to when Benedict was elected pope in 2005. The highly charismatic JP II had just died. JP II was the first non-Italian pope in ages. Yet many thought he was behind the times. So when this old German was elected, the spin was that the cardinals needed an old guy who would just last a couple years while they could choose a new long term pope.

Now that the guy has been in office 7 years, the question becomes "why is he resigning?".

I kind of liked Benedicit, for his intellectual traits. Not that I would agree with him on anything.

Agree. B-16 was just a caretaker. The purpose of his tenure was to allow time for some up and coming 40-50 year olds to mature a bit more. By resigning, he is honoring the intent of his election. Kudos to him for retiring gracefully rather than stubbornly trying to run a global organization in his declining years. Perhaps Queen Elizabeth could take a lesson here. BTW, no matter who is elevated next, there won't be sweeping doctrinal change in the catholic church. All the cardinals and the key decision makers are carefully vetted for their orthodoxy.

Indeed - if you look at the events which preceded, as well as wrapped up the Avignon Popes, it was exactly the play between the major Italian families' hold on the Papacy resulting in a non-Italian Pope. Said foreign Pope refused to play ball, and so was booted out and took refuge in France.
