And yet I bet it won't stop people driving their gas guzzling SUVs.

Not some of course. But I think the real cost of driving those tanks is starting to sink in. I'm seeing a move to more cars and at least smaller SUVs, which in many cases are still pretty bad on gas. Unfortunately, a lot of the older, bigger SUVs are now being driven by some of those least able to pay for the gas. Around here at least. Leftovers from the boom times, they won't bring much in the used market and many don't have the credit to buy another car. Of course those who can afford to will continue to drive them. I don't have any problem with that.

I'm thinking about one of these.

Unfortunately those people least able to afford to pay higher gas prices are the ones stuck with an SUV and the car note associated with it. They have no way to get out from under it without taking a loss on the car when they sell it.

BMW just introduced its X1 small stationwagon/SUV here in the US market to less than excited fan fare. In Europe everyone loves them.

For me to purchase a hybrid 3 series it is about 5 to 8k more on top of a regular 3 series price.

Fortunately they are coming out with a BMW 320 diesel apparently next year.

I have a 2012 Hyundai Accent hatchback. The car's computer says it's getting 44 MPG on pure highway driving, 37 MPG mixed city/hwy. My calculations at the pump are about 40 hwy, 33-35 mixed. I'll hold onto it until the great hybrid diesels getting 60+ mpg come here. Or maybe by that time I'll get a horse and buggy.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

              That X1 is ugly.
The 3 series are nice. I went with a used 528 and regret it. On paper, the gas mileage versus cost for a new 3 series did not seem worth. It drives me nuts every day that I get under 20 miles per gallon, however. I did not factor that into my equation... the emotional price. But, a Prius cannot climb a hill worth a lick.
My friend has a 335d ... it gets amazing mileage and is powerful.

When the cost moves up enough, people will change their habits. It's not that far away.

Definitely! I just wish people would wise up a bit.

Me too, but it isn't going to happen. A little bit of leadership would help but I don't have much hope for that either.

                      Re: Gas Prices Rising

One thing to keep in mind the next time you see a gas guzzling SUV on the highway next to you. Some of those folks are on the highway for one or two exits, no more. They might actually have short commutes which amount to a small weekly gas budget, no matter what gas mileage their vehicle gets. As they say, Your Mileage Will Vary (YMWV).

Now, when I"m commuting in northern/central NJ and see pickups and suburbans with Pennsylvania license plates, then I start to wonder when they are going to wake up.

                        Re: Gas Prices Rising

Weekly stats: Gasoline demand continues to rise. As did crude inventories in the Lower 48. The WTI discount to Brent increased. All of which means refinery cracking spreads also widened. Not much sign of a US recession in most of these figures. But the storm may take the shine of some of this week's consumption stats...
The DOE inventory report featured continuing improvements in gasoline demand.

US gasoline demand registered 8.42mb/d last week, raising the 4-week moving average to 8.42mb/d. The 4-week average is +4.7% compared to 2012 and -2.2% below the 5-year average.

Total US crude oil inventories rose +2.6mbbls (vs. +2.7 consensus) to 371.7mbbls. Crude stocks are +9.6% compared to last year’s level and +12.0% vs the 5-year average.

Average US gasoline cracks rose +10% and average US diesel cracks rose +18% last week as the Midwest and Mid-Con were stronger. In total, average US product cracks rose +13% to US$17.70/bbl last week, which is easily a new five-year high for this time of year.

The WTI-Brent spread averaged -US$20.57/bbl last week, much wider than the previous week’s average of -US$18.34/bbl.

Perhaps they will wise up in the next $0.20 cents or so. Then get dumb again later in the year.

upto and over 420 out here, maybe 10% higher than that on the outer isles.
methinks we'll get close to 5bux this year, assuming no 'intervention'....

I had last generation 330i stick-shift, got 24 MPG with mixed city/hwy driving (I don't have a lead foot but I'm not a slow driver by any means... I get 26 MPG if I do more Hwy and baby it in the city). Latest gen 328i loaner I tried for about a week and 600 miles gets 25 MPG... after 7 years, losing 2 cylinders, a numb electric steering and annoying start-stop, that's all I get? And the sticker-shock on a 335is with MSRP of close to $65k makes me cringe... so my solution - lease the ActiveE for now, and see where electric cars end up especially with ever decreasing cost of solar panels... Latest iteration of BMWs makes me want to consider Audi or even *gasp* Mercedes, since BMW is no more sporty than a Mercedes these days...

Test drove the 335d for about 3 days and 1.5 tank of gas... can't say I'm impressed... got around 28 MPG? I think Mercedes Bluetech may do better...
