    should have come here in 1999. this is were i got the inflation religion. how can you deflate (make scarce) something that is infinite?

    maybe the number of units falls, but the size of each unit can be caused to fall even faster.

    start of inflation...

    $1 buys 1 thing

    end of inflation...

    $100 buys 1 thing

    what if there are half as many things to buy?

    screw that challenge... make it 100th as many things available total because there's no credit and no one has any "money"

    ok, so print even more $1... that's called "stimulating demand"

    done. now $100 buys 1 thing and there are 1/100 as many as before

    take it to the extreme and you have zimbabwe $1,000,000 buys 1 thing and the store shelves are empty

    what can't people like wiess and mish and so on get this? brain dead.

    start with the premise: the paper is worthless. the whole effort of government in fiat money systems is to do the behavior engineering to cause the worthless paper and bits to be perceived as worth something. taking that perception away is NOT HARD!

      Good formulation - never read it put this way before.

        Take a look at Mish's site. It's peppered with Prechter ads. He's bought into the EWI religion that it all ends with a deflationary crash. I bought into that myself for awhile, about a year, and then I focused on the endless supply of paper money that has to find a home somewhere (government spending more than it takes in). Managed or not, we have a serious inflation problem and most people don't get it.

        The Ka-poom makes the most sense and it's why I spend so much time surfing around this forum for discussions about this topic; this is the only place that has offered that scenario as a possibility. Okay, deflate for awhile, but then we get the inflation as the solution to our ills. Mr Ph.D. on the Depression himself even said as much in that paper/speech from 2002 when he got his nickname, helicopter ben.

        He told us what his game plan would be in an economic slowdown and he is following the playbook to the letter, and now gold buyers believe it. The rest of them will argue deflation until they are blue in the face.
        It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye!

          who cares? why do i? I dunno. i shouldn't. but i can't help thinking all of these people could have protected themselves all these years and they didn't. they fell for well marketed ewi and prechter hokum. when do these guys admit defeat and let their people go free? it's irresponsible. they're as bad as the evil msm they beat on.

          guess i just hate

            So, metalman, what is your allocation in gold, silver, PM stocks?

              Folks,

              My view on inflation/deflation is more prosaic:

              Deflation initially hurts the small guy, but ultimately helps overall.

              Inflation is the opposite.

              Given the people in power are not small guys, which do you think will happen?

                Really? I don't see how inflation is helping Mugabe's cronies. They got to close shop.

                  oh, i swallowed the itulip 2001 "questioning fashionable investment advice" hook, line, sinker. but only after i'd listened like a moron to my advisor and got my ass handed to me in the tech bubble. with both hands. here you go!!! here's your ass!!! hope you like it!!!

                  didn't find itulip until later. but it made sense. i bought 10% gold, 5% silver, 5% plat for a total 20% alloc.

                  Gold US Gold Eagles 1oz coins: $277 -> $845 (3x)
                  US Silver Dollars: $4.80 -> $11.50 (2.4x)
                  Plat US Eagles 1oz coins: $462 -> $1444 (3x)

                  silver has some catching up to do.

                  now i look for the sell call. i've seen it on various sites but no sell from ej yet. not once since 2001. and the price has seen big setbacks. now that's what i call sticking to your guns. not that i don't ever wonder when the inflation will end. i'm still in but the higher it goes the more nervous i get. it's starting to feel like the tech bubble all over again. but my neighbors and mailman still aren't in so it isn't.

                    For the big guys - i.e. cronies in power, switch everything.

                    Mugabe's cronies will be fine in the end - they'll end up owning more than what they own now.

                      I find going back and looking at iTulip gold/Dow or Charles MacKay's gold/housing chart lowers my blood pressure when I am feeling that way...

                        James Dines just pounced on silver - and he's been waiting at that particular mouse-hole for five years for the main call. Food for thought on where that particular "top" is going to be ...

                          I don't think Eric's looking to make a sell call, just to analyze and communicate.

                              Очень Хорошо! (that one's for C1ue) / Sehr Gut! / 非常好! / Molto Buono! / Muy Bueno! / Tres Bien! / Πολύ καλός! / 非常によい! / Muito Bom!

                              Quite sparklingly good, Spartacus old chap.

                              All aboard !!!

                              There's a guy you and I know called Acrabbe, who deserves a coupla cold beers and a slap on the back from us right about now.

                              Of course, this trade could easily turn against us in the short term - but the significant upward pressures are underneath this commodity. If not right away, then it'll blow that much harder later on.
