    ----------

I wonder what a Venezeualan/US relationship will look like post Hugo Chavez?

I wonder if it will hasten US efforts and resources OUT of the Middle East and into it's traditional (western hemi)Sphere of Influence?

While GRG55 has mentioned on a number of occasions that Venezuela is of little direct energy use/value to China, but of HUGE importance to the US.....how will this play out?

Especially since in just the last 10 months Southeast Asia has seen visits from Hillary Clinton to Myanmar as well as President Obama to Myanmar and Cambodia.....a MASSIVE and rather quick shift in US foreign policy in a region bordering a growing China.

How quick until the new Secretary of State and President visit Venezuela is Chavez is dead and his replacement plays ball?

I imagine there will be Presidential/Imperial/VIP jets stacked up in a pattern over Caracas quite quickly.

Looking premature ...or well managed.....in this case. But it wouldn't be the first time Twitter provided an indication of a globally newsworthy event:

There is so much junk on Twitter that frankly, the million monkeys on typewriters have nothing more to offer.

            Hugo Chavez dead......

            http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/america...e-for-election

Looks like the initial rumor post was 2 months too soon.

            Elections in 20 days?

That could get interesting.....a couple of US military attaches have already been conveniently kicked out of the country and the US subtlely accused of giving Chavez cancer.

2 months too soon is still wrong.

After all, the 'rumor' that Bandar was dead will eventually also be right.

We can live with these minor errors. Thankfully Elvis is still alive...

maybe the rumor was right. ever see "weekend at bernie's"?
and in woody allen's "sleeper" the world dictator had been seriously injured in an assassination attempt, so they were keeping what was left [just his nose] on life support.

This was my thought, too. He could have died weeks ago for all we know.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

The possibility of such happening would be far more believable if

                      1) It weren't already known that Chavez was very, very seriously ill
                      2) There was some specific benefit or timeline for which delaying release of this news would be useful

As there haven't been any major political shifts in Venezuela, crackdowns on Venezuelans, or anniversaries/other dates of note - other than expelling a couple of 'cultural attaches', difficult for me to see the point.

the important timing issue was the election and inauguration of venezuela's president. iircc, chavez was "re-inaugurated" in abstentia, while [supposedly] out of the country and in a cuban hospital.

That seems reasonable except that Chavez won the election before he even went to Cuba.

The election was in October, Chavez went to Cuba in December.

Furthermore his successor is pushing for an election in April.

None of this is very consistent with the idea that it was necessary to 'bernie' Chavez.

how do you suppose it would have played out if chavez had died after being elected but before being inaugurated? not that i have any idea, mind you. just wondering what you think. any possibility of instability? i have no idea if they "bernied" chavez, btw, but i find it amusing to contemplate.

                              Everyone dies eventually.

The rumor of Chavez's demise provided a two month headstart for those inclined to consider likely post-Chavez relations between Venezuela and the rest of the world as stated in my original post.
