I think it is not the use of a weapon that needs to be studied here as the reason it is used. Anyone shooting any weapon for any reason in self defence should be permitted. And if that is self defence against an encroaching government, well, so be it.

Mark Ames has said that the first 'going postal' incidents were due to the big labor squeeze that started in the Reagan era, and that such behavior is still vastly over-represented in the United States vs. all other nations.

My own view is that there is probably a little truth to that, after all Charles Whitman was 1966, but I do think that media coverage exacerbates the problem.

Going postal is one form of suicide - and suicide in general is a call for help.

Why not commit suicide by cop - and in the process get 15 minutes of fame all over the US? possibly the world?
