  • Re: Gun Control Anyone?

This thread is way off the mark. Why does everyone continue to allow them to have such power over us? The posts in this thread take us all right into the socially engineered trap, yet again.

Continue to ignore, but I don't see anyone with anything new to say, and certainly nothing that will uplift us from our predicament.

As to why any law abiding citizen needs to own a semi auto rifle with a high capacity magazine, maybe if you were in New Orleans during Katrina or in Florida after Andrew or in LA during the riots you would understand. I had a coworker, good friend, who was from the northeast and never owned a firearm. We had many discussions on the matter and he had not been raised around guns and felt that by having a gun in his home he was endangering his children.Well, he was living in New Orleans when Katrina hit. His home was not flooded but they had no power and the city was in anarchy. What cops who had not fled were rendered ineffective by the massive scale of the damage. His neighbor came over after the storm had passed and he was taken aback by the sight of the glock pistol on his hip. His neighbor had to point out the fact that the sound of his generator running would be a signal to the the looters that he had power and supplies and they may come to take his supplies and harm his family. He asked if my friend owned a gun. Of course he did not so he loaned him a 12 gauge and they sat on the porch of their homes that night and watched as groups of men came down the streets but passed on by after seeing the home owners armed. This one event changed his thoughts on gun owner ship completely. He said that he felt so shamed that as a husband and father he had no means to protect his family. He knew my family had some rural property on the North shore where we hunted and asked if I would teach him some basic fire arms skills so he could safely own and use firearms. He now owns an AR-15 and a Glock 17 and has become quite proficient with both. Even his wife who was vehemently anti gun before Katrina had no qualms about owning guns to protect their family.

Something to look forward to...an entire nation armed to the teeth. Can't hardly wait till you folks train up every kindergarten teacher in all 50 States to defend the pupils. That'll be quite an accomplishment.

Back when I worked for Big Oil, one of the company's regional offices was in New Orleans, and I had a chance to spend a bit of time there in the late 1980s, including Mardi Gras one year. My wife and I had been with some friends in the French Quarter and were walking the few blocks back to the Hyatt Regency when a policeman stopped us near the corner of Canal and Chartres, asked where we were going and then told us to get a taxi as it was "too dangerous to be walking in that direction at night". One of my brothers, who used to race Olympic class Star boats, had an identical experience after a race weekend and regatta party at the Miami Yacht Club when he tried to walk back to his hotel. In his case the cop called the cab. Sad commentary...

            Are the possible outcomes:

            1) a tragic incident is used as a distraction for the upcoming austerity measures and ongoing QE bailouts

            2) a tragic incident is used to disarm the sheeple

            3) a tragic incident generates lots of copy, then fades away for all but those directly involved.

            I vote #3.

The goal here is to further devolve the humanity of man, further divorcing man from the concept that he was created in God's image. As this goal becomes realized, and as the concept of man as merely a carbon based lifeform willing to perpetrate all forms of evil on itself, then the doorway opens for any measure of restraint imagineable, with extensive public support, of course.

Fair enough and obviously your choice.

But I sincerely hope that what happened to a close friend of mine in the 1990s, with similar opinions to yours, never happens to anyone else.

A psycho broke into his home at night and to make a long and very ugly story very short, he lost both his wife and daughter before it was all over. He does have a handgun and good training in how to use it now.

And I hope that I'm not coming across as a fear monger.

                      ====================================

Different subject - thank goodness for the general high sanity level here about guns. It's like a haven.

I've been participating in various gun control threads on Barry Ritholtz "The Big Picture blog" the last few days on various gun threads, and mostly posting very much similar or the same things that I've read so far. I tried very hard to not flame anyone or be anything but mannerly.

The lack of even a rudimentary ability to actually listen and maybe even dare to look at contrary facts to the general positions (very much including ban all guns and ammo) and opinions held there is, frankly, somewhat shocking to me. I thought that I'd grown too cynical to be surprised like that... and the bottom line is that I actually got banned, and to top it off many of my post were just plain deleted.

Warning - don't expect to express opinions and cite facts etc., even with manners on, there that substantially disagree with Ritholtz and various liberals without being banned and your posts deleted. Of course it's his right to ban anyone, but I didn't at all think that it would happen if I was just discussing and debating.

edit/add: I've just heard directly from Mr. Ritholtz, and the full story is not in yet. I'll report back with details when things are clearer.

I think it's more than a bit dangerous to not consider people like Lanza or the Columbine guy or the Aurora guy psychotic. How could it be sane or social to do heinous and well beyond disgusting acts of mass murder, involving children or not?

                        psychosis

look at the norwegian guy, whose motivation we know- or at least we know what he says they were, and what he says is consonant with how he behaved. his motives and means were heinous, but not out of touch with reality. he wanted to decimate the next generation of leadership for the liberal party he hated. that's what he did.

I submit that his actual acts were truly insane, hugely anti-social - and quite psychotic, by definition.

I also disagree with reality including it being ok to do mass murder. That reality is just plain insane at the very least.

I am a fire arm owner. I believe I have a God given right to protect my life and my loved ones life. Bad guys will have guns no matter what laws are passed. Ergo I will need a gun for protection. As others have pointed out the definition of what an assault weapon is, is murky. I have chosen a weapon that can be quickly fired many times, because it may take more than one hit to stop a bad guy and the likely hood that I may miss with one or more shots. As for the school shooting do we know how he got in? He was carrying an assault weapon and wearing body armor. In my school there is a camera on the door, and you have to be buzzed in. I know you may be able to shoot your way in but don't believe the hollywood crap about being easy. It would take time and time is life saving. We can beef up security at school, but as others have pointed out the shooter will move to other soft targets like malls, churches, out door events etc. I guess at least he will not be killing our babies. With 100 million gun owners, and 300 million guns, the gvt is really powerless to keep bad or deranged people from access. Hopefully this is a wakeup call to the 100 million that they need to secure their weapons from people who should not have them. I actually hope they re-pass the meaningless awb of the 80's for political cover and not do anything more drastic. heck the gvt needs money maybe a really expensive federal gun id, would be a way to fleece the people.
