70-100 mph winds are nothing- my mobile home was periodically buffeted by 65+ mph winds in Albuquerque and it held together. But isn't most of the damage from Sandy due to storm surge flooding rather than wind?

In 1969 I was on vacation in New Orleans with my family when Hurricane Camille hit. Recorded sustained winds of 190 mph. They say no one will ever know how high the winds got because she destroyed all the wind recording equipment along the coast.

another day atop The Rock Pile - aka Mount Washington, back in my old neck of the woods...
where even then, if the chairlift is running to the summit of Wildcat - garrens-ball-barrens we'd be ridin...

but, seems the aussies have overtaken the big white mountain's long-held record of 231mph.

It snows on Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Haleakala every year, and it frosts on the mountains sometimes down to about 2000 ft. There was hail on Oahu the other day, which is fairly rare. We had hail at our house once in the last 50 years... tiny grains of rice. There are very rarely snow flurries in the valleys above Honolulu.

Yep. I've ridden my bike in the desert around Tucson when it was in the mid 90s, and then drove up to the mountains just above town the same day, with snow still on the ground. Had similar situation with Haleakala as mentioned.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

i have always said this, but not in these words. This is a good reason not judge other people too quickly. People dont live in a vacuum. usually they are mean, unhappy etc. because they are scared and/or carrying a heavy burden. Offer to carry their burden for a while and they will become your friend.
