  • MIT researchers find promising new lead to cheap water

Please read the comments. I know I would be not only ready but eager to invest a hundred dollars or more over the course of say a year in a score of startups that looked promising and that were interesting to me. Why not raise capital a hundred dollars at a time from 10,000 people thru the internet rather than a million dollars from one person or private equity firm. Wouldn't this be a practical way to start "sharing the wealth", or flattening the wealth disparity?

How many wars in the third world are due to scarce resources like clean water? Mass funding by average people of research and startups could have several beneficial effects that reach far beyond just wealth creation for the investors.

Its easier to drown people with fresh water, and thus I believe we should pursue water desalination with the intent to weaponize it.

Its the only thing I can think of to get it any funding.......

My municipality (Carlsbad, California) is in the final stages of doing a big desal deal with Poseidon Resources. This will supposedly produce desal water that is only a little more expensive than what we are getting now. They say they are working with conventional RO made far more efficient via better mechanical/engineering means rather than "breakthrough" technology such as in the cited article above. I believe I recall seeing a demo where they had filters in something that looked like a giant, rapidly-spinning set of chambers that looked like a huge spinning revolver-gun chamber.

I am looking forward to this because I do greatly fear for the integrity of our traditional water supply here in So Cal. We will be producing quite a surplus of desal water that we will be able to sell to other municipalities. Assuming things work as advertised of course.......

I talked to an engineer about desalination once. He told me that the problems of prefiltration and scale build up are huge and having the perfect filter was pretty far down on his list of blockers.

            Or what about this?

If they use thermal, they could then take the hot, briny salt water and use it for fracking! Voila!
