    Not exactly transmuting base metals into gold, but in a way it is: using a cheap metal like iron to perform industrial processes performed by an expensive metal like platinum. That would reduce the consumption of the expensive metal for industrial uses. That should reduce the price, all things being equal.

    Photovoltaic panels use about an ounce of silver per panel. If they can get that down, it would reduce some of the industrial use of silver and reduce the price.
