  • British retail is getting KILLED!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...ob-losses.html

Lots of chains are getting killed, they got loaded up with debt during the boom peroid & now they can't service their debt. BTW while all this is going on Amazon is building postal centres EVERYWHERE!.........i know they don't pay a div, but this be the right time to buy into them?

I recently worked at a retail place and they felt their most significant threat was Amazon. And this was a home improvement place, which would likely be one of the last places to succumb to the online threat. So if they are that worried, then yeah, it could be a good time. Hard to say if Amazon is specifically the best bet at this point, though.

Funny that Dell with their direct model isn't doing well.

I find that buying online won't save you money because more often than not, you get the wrong thing.

Dell isn't doing well because their computers are the same as every other major vendors' computers and they are largely relegated to competing on price. Dell made its money by successfully being an assembler of parts and selling at a healthy mark-up. Those days are gone and there are enough Asian companies anxious to play the race-to-zero pricing war game to make it impossible for Dell to repeat its success in the Post-PC era markets. If Dell is going to do well, it's going to have to start generating some real intellectual property instead of garbage like business process IP.

I seem to recall that you're in Singapore so perhaps that's why your experience isn't entirely satisfactory? Buying on-line is great in the U.S. because you almost always get better prices from the seller not having a bricks-and-mortar presence, can avoid paying sales taxes, and get delivery to your door. You also don't have to worry going to a store only to discover that the product you want is not in-stock.
