I thought these were interesting colour photos,

These vivid color photos from the Great Depression and World War II capture an era generally seen only in black-and-white. Photographers working for the United States Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI) created the images between 1939 and 1944.

The 11th one down from 1942 says it all,

    Oranges 1c
    Grapefruit 5c
    New Potatoes 6lb (about 2.7Kg) 23c
    Apples 4lb (about 1.8Kg) 25c

Clearly some things were better in the past. They probably had a lot more taste and flavour as well.

Very cool. Amazing how much more real things look in color. There is a WWI color photo site as well. Not colorized, but real color photos. But even the colorized civil war pictures help bring things to life.

      Were they?

Let's see ... the melt value of a penny and a nickel from 1942 is ~$1.83 thanks mostly to the nickel.

So ... with the equivalent purchasing power, you can get today a lot more than one grapefruit and one orange for $1.83. Me thinks you forgot the fiat currency factor.

      Food for thought.

Edit: If you had the quarter to buy the potatoes ... today it's worth $5.82
