I'm not in a position to assert whether this is true or not, but it does make some measure of cynical sense to me. If Netanyahu picks a fight before the election, it will be a considerable boost to Romney, and could even mean that for the next four years, Israel gets to work with a far more friendly US administration than the current one. If he knows he is going to attack, waiting until after the election might just mean a lower level of support for his attack.

Furthermore, if it goes down now, both Obama and Romney will essentially be forced to compete to show themselves the better friend to Israel. That could result in far more aid, both military and non-military, than would otherwise have been on offer from the Obama administration.

I could even imagine that this sort of arrangement was discussed in a recent candidate's visit. It is also very hard to ignore the massive support of Adelson for Romney.

So even if the idea doesn't yet have anything conclusive behind it, I would characterize the circumstantial data as troubling. The national interest of Israel certainly seems to line up with a pre-emptive attack, coming soon.

President in Israel is a mostly ceremonial title, with little power. Not that Peres has no political power, but the title itself means little in this context.

Has this position changed? It appears that Israel is backing down from their threats!? Or at least newspapers speculate so.
