  • World Corruption Index 2011

    (h/t Jessie's Cafe)

I always love looking at these rankings for a number of reasons:

    1) to see who is beating us (New Zealand is tops)
    2) to see where the US stands overall
    3) to see where Uruguay stads as I am farming there (now just one place and a tenth of a point behind the US)
    4) to see who else in the 'banana republic' world is actually beating the US

    Enjoy!

And as further evidence of Uruguay's appeal: Uruguay's plan to legalize marijuana sales.

I say that in the context of their willingness to recognize the ineffective policy of interdiction.

I see where FIRE predominates, it's rated high on being "Very Clean".

        Re: World Corruption Index 2011

While we are losing ground both in the corruption perceptions index (CPI) and ranking, it is in the ranking that we're taking the biggest hit. It plunged 42% from 14 to 24 over the past 10 years.

The American Financial Crisis did more to hurt our credibility than any even since TI began the survey.

At least we can console ourselves that our largest creditor is more than three times more corrupt per the CPI.

China's CPI is steadily improving, but not as fast as the CPI of other nations. As a result China's CPI ranking fell 34%
        from 52 to 79 between 1998 and 2009.

Yes, the US is deeply in debt to a country that is listed as among the "Highly Corrupt" in the CPI rankings.

        What could possibly go wrong?

just pure bullshit. Imagine the reaction of Obama and the rest little time before an election if such a thing had happened. The last time Soviet Union deployed nuclear warhead missiles in Cuba (1962) we had the "October crisis" in which the world was quite near to a nuclear holocaust.
At that time Cuba was governed by a young and impulsive Fidel Castro who had just won a guerrilla war against dictator Batista.
I can imagine the now mature Cuban gov. (Raul Castro is nearly 80 years old) accepting something as provocative as Russian nuclear missiles in their territory.

Especially when Raul Castro just unilaterally offered to start new diplomatic relations.

+1. Libya a country ruled by militias is "less corrupt" than Venezuela. Angola is too. The inconsistencies of such list are so gross that make it worthless.
The map of most corrupt countries in South America is almost the map of those with worse relations with USA.

And the US is happy to engage in the same practices against other countries as they get so perturbed about when their own citizens do it. Why is this not surprising?
