Ah but surely you know that:-

In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt

Political(and religious) philosophers have had HUGE influences on the way societies are run. If I were a conspiracy theorist (which I'm turning into!) I would argue that (Leo) Straussian thinking has dominated the decisions politicians have made over the last 30-40 years.
The rich elites always feared the mob but after the 1960s they also feared the "liberal masses" having too much dough and free time on their hands as well and weren't actually happier despite their new found wealth. (crime going up was a shock to everyone). Solution = destroy the drug taking, hedonistic free love, student marching, anti-government, criminally minded, commune experimenting, free thinking liberal but unhappy space cadet class but make sure you don't starve them into rioting. Job almost done.

Next step is to give them a higher purpose so they can be truly happy. A return to "traditional values" is usually a good start (these values can be whatever you want them to be no matter how mythological.) Nationalism is usually up there, along with an 80 hour week. Unions aren't. And then there's always war.

    Anyway that's if you're a conspiracy theorist (which I'm not-yet).

The tax rates of the 40s, 50s and 60s were unbelievably high compared to today. They also culminated in a a very wealthy society as a whole so why was it changed when it had worked in making society in general richer?

Below is a table taken from Wikipedia so I can't verify its veracity. It sort of makes the Laffer curve seem laffable in my eyes. The tax rates were eye-watering but do seem to fit the idea that everyone is paying less of a share these days.
