I think people have a hunger for relatable characters and good storytelling, something that's usually lacking in the mega blockbusters. That's why Shakespeare holds up so well over the centuries. It's a big reason why The Avengers has been so successful, because Joss Whedon has a love for character development and great dialog. He's not just a "let's blow stuff up" guy. People (like myself) who aren't even into comic books liked The Avengers because it's primarily about flawed, lonely people creating relationships, rather than just special effects, car chases and explosions. It's good storytelling.

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Foreigh distribution is a Big Money item for Hollywood blockbusters. Car chases and repeatedly exploding special F/Xs don't need subtitles.

Good point! There are quite a few visually stunning movies that I can only watch with the sound turned off because the dialog is so cringe-worthy. The second Star Wars trilogy comes to mind.
