    Mike,

Nice to see you back in good spirits.
I read that article, and it seems to be a concise summary of every crazy conspiracy theory ever thought up by anyone anywhere.

It's delightful that the one idea you carry away with alarm (from so many) is that someone might manufacture gold.

Nuclear synthesis of noble metals is nothing new. But I've never heard of it being done on a commercial scale. And I can't imagine another way to do it other than using a nuclear reactor or a particle accelerator. And I can't imagine a way to get stable, non-radioactive gold out cheaply. If there were another way, I'd have to imagine it would throw my admittedly rudimentary understanding of atomic physics on its head.

More interesting is the market in synthetic diamonds. Gemesis is selling them online now. They're currently selling at fairly comparable market prices compared to naturally occurring ones. The only method to distinguish them from naturally occurring diamonds is supposedly some sort of spectroscopic analysis invented by De Beers. I'd doubt it matters much. And I assume their key marketing strategy is that they can prove they're not producing conflict diamonds. If there's any market of scale with the technology, it could actually drive prices down over the next decade or two.
