Even Titanium, which is far more resistant to corrosion than Gold, does corrode, even under conditions that don't seem all that stressful.

The first carbon fiber bike frames had titanium lugs.

The carbon fiber set up an electrolytic reaction that eventually killed the titanium surface finish needed to bond to the carbon fiber/epoxy.

Why don't you try wrapping the gold in the mortgage backed securities we sold you. That should keep 'em from rusting.

Be sure to let us know when you're in the market for some nice infrastructure. For a small finder's fee, I can get you the inside track on the Brooklyn Bridge.;)

Just a note that the referenced article about gold talks about the oxidation of gold alloys (like that used for jewelery).

Legitimate gold bullion should be >99.9% gold and as such should be essentially impervious to oxidative damage. Physical degredation/oxidation of high quality gold bullion requires extraordinarily harsh conditions. This leaves the possibility that the gold under discussion is of much lower purity than believed.
