      Re: Fords new radical downsized engine

      Starving Steve's ( old man ) rules of car-buying:

      1.) NEVER buy the first or second year, even third year of anything, not from Ford nor from any car-maker;

      2.) Would Ford pay for ALL repairs/servicing, whenever and wherever, since Ford is experimenting using your $ and time?

      3.) It's a Ford: maker of the Pinto and the Escort--- not bad cars in the past, but not good cars either;

      4.) NEVER buy a motor with a rubber timing-belt, no matter what they tell you;

      5.) 3 is an odd-number, never buy a motor with an odd-number of cylinders;

      6.) Repairs and servicing still cost much more than any $ you MIGHT save with a supposed fuel-economy;

      7.) Will the car last, more or less, trouble-free for 250,000 MILES, not km?

      8.) Would this car survive (trouble-free) the cold/snow/salt/slop/gravel of Canada, Alaska, Scandanavia and Russia?

      9.) Another rusty Ford?

      10.) Will it depreciate like ice cream in Arizona?

      11.) Would there be mechanics with know-how, experience, and parts, wherever and whenever you need them?

      12.) Why break your neck; do you need this head-ache?

        Good eveing Steve
        Please allow me to explain, because we at peek oil...the cost is rocketing FAST here in the UK. Not long ago it was £0.80p a litre........its £1.39 & going to £1.50 very soon. Because of this we require cars that will do many more miles per gallon (MPG).

        On top of this the goverment imposes LOTS of taxes...........lets take road tax for example.
        My 1.8 turbo cost about £225 a years, a silly SUV £459..........its a tax ob CO2 output....the smaller the output the cheaper the tax.

        The road tax is FREE if your car outputs less then 100 CO2 per Km.......at present very few cars do. The Ford you see here is close....a smaller lighter car (Fiesta) would get under with this engine.

        Road tax is only one tax, if you are a business user then you get taxed on the cars CO2 output & your income....weather your a 25% tax bracket or 40% tax bracket.......then there is also the fact that low CO2 cars use less fuel & my word Fuel IS TAXED in the UK.

        So, here is a Focus that will not cost much tax compared to say a BMW....

        Mike

            Hmm... some of those rules are questions! I like rule 1 and 2. If the answer to two isn't: "yes they would offer a 10 year warranty on the experimental technology (as Nissan does with the new CVT)" then rule 1 applies. If they did provide warranty, then buy the third or maybe second year if you really see value in the design.

                the most effective immediate response to peak oil is conservation. Fat chance . . .

                The holidays sent car shoppers back to family cars, SUVs and pickup trucks as most major automakers outpaced analysts' expectations to finish the year. The top 10 sellers for the month include five pickups and SUVs and five cars, which is a similar mix to December 2010.
