Senior members of current CBO staff I have talked to who were also there when Stockman was feel that he should have stayed. They admired his leadership then. He's entertaining in his current role but if he'd stayed and fought they'd respect him more. "He's not effective as an outsider," one staff member told me.

      “The Education of David Stockman”
("None of us really understands what's going on with all these numbers.")
      The Atlantic, 1981
      http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/...stockman/5760/

The article still stands the test of time: The intractable parts of the federal budget, the ever increasing piece of the pie gobbled by defense, the incredible price of each congress person's vote, the power of K street, the naivete of the American voter.

Stockman made a horrible bet on the US auto industry and probably should have been convicted of the fraud for which he was indicted. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...ori34&refer=us

With his resume, he can't seem anything but opportunistic.

      Moyers could have done better.

What a quote. It tells it all.
Who is effective (e.g., at change and leadership) as an outsider? No one I would suggest. As Chris hedges so aptly pointed out, one can serve truth and justice OR privilege and power, but not both; unless you agree to support, for most part, the financial, military, and other special interest status quo, you won't be allowed inside.

Really liked the interview. A lot more like this and we are slowly educating more of the population just how broken and systemically corrupt/unfair the "system" has become. We can hope and pray that our culture's historical belief and premium on "fair dealing" will win over "abandon ship, everyone for themselves"

If Bill Moyers told me the sky was blue I'd not believe it until I took a good look myself.

Moyers is a committed "Progressive" (Leftist). He edits interviews and documentaries to ALWAYS shed more "light" upon conservative misdeeds. He's been quite effective in use of the soft smear.

"I'm going out telling the story that I think is the biggest story of our time: how the right-wing media has become a partisan propaganda arm of the Republican National Committee. We have an ideological press that's interested in the election of Republicans, and a mainstream press that's interested in the bottom line. Therefore, we don't have a vigilant, independent press whose interest is the American people."

Moyers can make this statement with a straight face while not admitting (or realizing) his own bias and the fact that the "mainstream media" is heavily biased to the Left.
I won't waste my time reading or listening to anyone who can exhibit such hypocracy.

He lists himself as a political "independent". He's about as "independent" as Sean Hannity. But at least Hannity doesn't project his ignorant blather with my tax dollars.

The quote you posted was from 2004, seven years ago.

Currently, I think Moyers is more disgusted with the Democratic party than with any other part of the political spectrum. His attacks on Obama are the most articulate and scathing out there. He's narrowed his focus almost exclusively to corruption on Wall Street and in Washington.

He's no longer using many if any of your tax dollars...

("Bill Moyers raised all the money from the funders listed in the opening and close of the broadcasts. Neither CPB nor PBS contributed to these productions.")

I think all of us are constantly in search of honest journalism. Where do you go for long reads where you know the author has been working/interviewing for months? Where do you go for unbiased live interviews?

                cspan? al jazeera?

                Maybe, hopefully, Moyers
