Florence gunman shoots Senegalese street vendors dead

Senegalese men protest in Florence against the deaths of the vendors

A lone gunman with extreme right-wing sympathies has gone on a shooting spree in Florence, killing two Senegalese street vendors and wounding three others before killing himself.

Gianluca Casseri, 50, an accountant, first shot dead two vendors and wounded a third with a .357 Magnum at the crowded Piazza Dalmazia street market on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday morning.

He then fled in a car after threatening to shoot a stall holder who attempted to stop him, reappearing later in the day at the central San Lorenzo market where he fired at two African vendors, wounding both.

Police officers found Casseri back in his car in the car park of the market, where they fired warning shots before he reportedly shot himself dead.

Liège gunman in bloody assault on shoppers and commuters

A lone gunman has brought bloodshed and mayhem to the eastern Belgian city of Liège, killing three people in a frenzied attack during which he lobbed hand grenades and fired an assault rifle into crowds of shoppers and commuters.

The man, named as 33-year-old Nordine Amrani, died after going on the rampage in Place Saint-Lambert, near the city's bus station, court and Christmas market. Two boys aged 15 and 17 were killed on the spot, while a 75-year-old woman died of her injuries later. A two-year-old child was reported to be in a critical condition in hospital, and at least 75 people were injured.

Police said it was not clear whether Amrani, who had served time in jail for offences involving guns and drugs, had killed himself or died accidentally. He had been due to appear for police questioning this afternoon. The prosecutor of Liège, Danièle Reynders, said he had brought the weapons in a rucksack from his home and walked alone to the square in the city centre.

The attack began shortly after 12.30pm Belgian time, when Amrani is believed to have thrown three hand grenades into a bus shelter before opening fire with a revolver and a rifle. The blasts and gunfire spread chaos across the city centre as shoppers ran to safety and police urged those in the area to stay inside while explosives experts searched the area for unexploded grenades.

What once brought reactions of alarm and speculation is now taken in stride . . . petite paradigm shift or a slide down the slope to anything can (and will) happen . . . .

The owl of minerva flies at night Don.

Or the talking-parrot of alarm flies whenever spooked / the door's left open / it occurs to him...

Just kidding. It's a good question. Undoubtedly we are learning that the crash happens in disorienting combinations of cataclysm, apparent hail-mary "saves", boredom - doomer fatigue - and often almost imperceptible decline.

Don't have the wherewithal to fill this out at the moment, but I wonder what our "year end review" would look like?

What trends or events do we collectively or individually think were significant in 2011? Or maybe more provocatively, what events or trends have you seen in 2011 that seem to have somehow been missed / misaprehended / pushed under the carpet etc...

To start it off, I suspect that MF Global was kind of the stalking horse in economic news this year. It seems to me that what's been exposed is just how heavy the reliance on levering everything has become. If I were a company treasurer I'd be very alarmed at the notion that the company I represent could be cleaned out with apparent impunity. I wouldn't say that this realization spreads like panic. I would imagine it's more of a gradual, cautious withdrawal, until a certain minimum level of activity is reached and then, sauve qui peut.
