Mother Shoots 2 at State Office, Then Kills Herself

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A woman who for months was unable to qualify for food stamps pulled a gun in a state welfare office on Monday and staged a seven-hour standoff with the police that ended with her shooting her two children before killing herself, officials said.

The children, a 10-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter, were in critical condition Tuesday. The mother was identified as Rachelle Grimmer, 38. A police investigator, Joe Baeza, said Ms. Grimmer had recently moved from Zanesville, Ohio.

Ms. Grimmer first applied for food stamps in July but was denied because she did not turn in enough information, said Stephanie Goodman, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services.

A tragedy. I've been reading more and more stories of violent attacks upon the elderly, violent mobs robbing convenience stores... violence in general seems to be spreading.

yes it is and in direct proportion to the number of tents in the parks and on the sidewalks in the major metro areas, it seems.

(and NO, i'm not infering OWS'rs either, more like the other group of 99'rs... you know, the ones who are 'contributing' to the sudden decline in the unemployment stats...)

I think it's very dangerous to suppose that one's personal awareness of 'more and more' anecdotes of violence is any indication of a real trend. I'm not suggesting that there is or isn't a trend, and I wouldn't be surprised if one develops in response to the crumbling situation, but I really don't think a trend will be discernable by watching the news. Not that I would put much faith in FBI statistics to the contrary. But I think that sensational events like the one reported by Fred can cause a distorted view of what is really going on.

you might be right ms shiny! tho i dont see much evidence of any real improvement, certainly not in my biz (and i simply dont believe the stats we are seeing in the lamestream media from a .gov administration that is intent on keeping its job for another 4years)

and leeqs: eye see more and more homeless/distitute people on the streets out this way, the numbers are growing by the week - they were able to keep them mostly out of sight during the 'big meeting' that happened a couple weeks back, but now that charade is over they are popping back into view all over HNL

and i'm seeing evidence in the supermarkets that they cant get what they'd like to, far as prices on 'optional' stuff and are deep discounting it more that usual, it seems, anyway - i doubt theres been any decline in the price they pay, so its got to be they simply cant sell it at the desired mark up. (which works for me, as i only eat what safeway is 'giving away' this week, but buy enuf of it to last til next time they give em away ;)

probably one of many more to come, no doubt, as the pressure for survival kranks up
would expect that the 'holiday syndrome' will be quite acutely felt by many this year....

Maybe these fema camps will be better place than the streets for the homeless. Maybe, "they" do not have evil motives.
