    Really idiotic.

Beijing air was heavily polluted even in 1994 - the first time I visited.

It was because they are poor, and many people used coal to heat and cook.

Plus Beijing has relatively very poor air circulation.

Los Angeles was heavily air polluted in that same era but that pollution was due to industry and cars. Sure, it is better now because most of the industry is gone as well as some incremental car emissions improvement.

I remembered the yellow haze in LA when I went there around 1990. I also went to Beijing in Dec a couple years later, the air was better. I remembered the skies were blue on Tiananmen Square. But the air in Shenyang was really bad.

Actually, the main intention of this thread is not to show that pollution is really bad in China, but rather to illustrate the reliability of statistics that comes out from China. Something as trivial as air pollution of a city can be manipulated, let alone national economic figures.

The fact that "Crazy Bad" could become turn out as "slightly polluted" (they are in complete contrast) is proof that the pollution index for the day is based on the whims of some official, nothing scientific at all.

And if you guessed correctly, "The difference between Chinese and US standards." is said tongue in cheek.

In the US, statistics are released based on real data + manipulation (Fed inflation figures, etc).

But in China, real data may not even be used at all.

Fear not, not for a second did I treat even a bit seriously.

For all of you who bash the EPA, this should be a warning. A balance must be struck somewhere.
Good point cb. Americans take (relatively) clean air for granted. As if everyone would voluntarily keep the air clean without an EPA. Now do they go too far sometimes? That's another issue.

There's a saying, the grass is greener on the other side.

Most people still can't fathom what an Atheist new world order would look like. Something like along the lines of Pagan Roman Empire or the Mongols hordes.
