He just bought a used car for $20,000 when he hadn't even paid off the $26,000 on the last car he bought a scant few years ago.

I do not understand it. How can you be that oblivious to your own spending habits?

I've made some bad choices in my time. I've spent way too much money on travel and hookers, but I've kept sight of my finances enough to not be in a situation where I am constantly worried about money.
i'm one of those fools. I pilot a crew cab GMC diesel pickup. I really like it despite the crap MPG of 13.5/19.5MPG. Then again I only drive about 6k miles/yr now. In 6 years i have just over 6ok, and the high mileage years are behind me now. I doubt that, even if diesel hits $6/gal I would sell it because my road mileage is so low every year.

Your neighbor with the short commute done by SUV, they spend not much on gas either, and drive something they enjoy.

Now if I was doing some 50 miles round trip every day I would get a Prius, but for the roughly 100+ miles a week? Nah, i'll just drive what I enjoy.

There is a difference between you and them. They buy these $20,000-30,000 vehicles that get around 10 mpg, then complain they have no money and have no idea what to do. It irks me to no end because they are oblivious to the problems they caused themselves.
