  • UK pension age increase

We have a huge demographic problem. Life expectancy is increasing by about 3 months per year. At that rate, it is likely that many young people will make it to 100 and beyond. We are going to have to raise the retirement age. Basically, each person will have to continue working until they are physically unable to work. For some that might happen in the 50s, for others in the 80s.

There has only been a short period in history when this hasn't been so. If you're not retiring in the next 10-15 years, you just missed it.

What happens when life expectancy increases by more than one year per year?

Is it a WHEN, or is it an IF?

I had a look at both Russia's and Argentina's life expectancy numbers over the past couple of volatile decades:

Russia's didn't look so hot......Argentina's on the other hand looks reasonably good considering the economic upheaval they've gone through.

I can imagine state retirement benefits being inflated away at a slower rate than the horrible inflation suffered by post Soviet Russia retirement pension beneficiaries.

I would think inflation, combined with ratcheting up the retirement age(70 anyone?), and maybe a short-to-medium term plateauing of life expectancy could offer some help in getting the books back in order.

I do wonder about the risk of solvent private pension funds being nationalized directly or indirectly via forced investment choices.
