Apple Inc. on Wednesday cut the price of the top iPhone by $200, discontinued the low-end model and unveiled a new version of its popular iPod media player with wireless Internet access and other iPhone features.

The 8-gigabyte iPhone will sell for $399, and the 4-gigabyte model, which sold for $399, will be phased out.

Ouch - so everyone who lined up to buy an iPhone just paid $200 extra for an inferior product and the privilege of beta testing for 1 month.

It looks like Apple has failed to re-ignite hype; now I again search for a re-entry into an Apple bear straddle.

Sorry Mr. Customer who forked out $599 for our lovely iPhone in the last 2 weeks. Have a $100 credit - for iPhone accessories; just consider the other $100 a 2 week early adopter fee.

That 's what you get for being such an easy marketing target...err I mean fine Apple customer...err I mean the danger of buying really cool new technology.

Jobs said Apple will hand out $100 credits for Apple's retail and online stores to any iPhone owners who aren't eligible for a rebate under the company's refund policy. They policy covers those who bought their phones within 14 days of the price cut.

We use all Apple gear here at the Tulip. But we never, ever buy the latest and greatest. Apple has a long history of charging its early adopters a huge "I'm cool, I'm one of the first!" fee. Jobs must figure, hey, they must know by now I'm gonna do that, so he doesn't see it as screwing anyone. Later he tweaks the fee based on virulence of customer response. Little "Boooo!" noises from the early adopter base and press nets a 20% rebate. Big "Boooooooooooo!" nets more.

Shareholders love it.

Ack, where'd I go wrong? I've never owned any Apple product...

The last time I used Apple was in college - although I must admit the early network for playing games was cool.

Then again, I was using the Internet in 1987 for games

BOT's don't get old. They get recycled at the BOT "Club-Med-Yard".

You're still in prototype trials. They may upgrade your firmware and release you for a second duty cycle when the full BOT production run are released to populate the Zoo.
