  • Cost of doing business - the small business thread

My cousin owns a mechanic shop in Newark NJ, it is a tough way to make a living but he likes the work. Anywhoo- I was visiting him last week, where I saw him in action at his shop during his "Slow August" marketing campaign, I want to share some war stories with you from what I saw:

He hired a couple of guys to pass out flyers promoting an Oil change special for $21.95. Now, that price seems cheap to me so I asked him what was the deal, how could he offer such a deal?

He tells me that the $21.95 is the cost of the Oil and Filter, he chucks the cost of labor for doing the oil change to a marketing expense. So in other words, he pays the customer to give him a shot at becoming the customer's mechanic.

The cost breaks down like this: 5 Quarts of 10w30 Bulk motor oil at 3 dollars a quart = $15. Plus Group 7 or Wix Oil filter 6 or 7 bucks = $21 to $22 bucks.

As I am hanging out a customer comes in with a 2008 Toyota Matrix, the prospective customer asks for the Oil Change Special which my cousin readily did process the work order.

Once on the lift, as one of the mechanics is changing the oil, the mechanic gives the car an inspection and sees that the car needs front brakes. The mechanic tells my cousin that the car needs front brakes which he relays to the customer with a quote for the cost of the job.

He quotes the customer about $200 bucks for the front brakes, which the customer agrees to have done.

Looking back, I was wondering how is it that they make money to stay in business, he tells me it is very rough but he is staying in business strong for he is following a very basic formula, his goal is to make 8% net profit per annum.

Here is how that job broke down:

AC Delco Professional Pads: Sell Price: $79.97 Cost $60.00 Markup 33%
Labor to resurface front rotors and change pads: Sell Price: $102.00 at about 1.5 hours. Cost $80.00 Markup 25%
Oil Change parts sell price: $21.95 Cost $22.00 Markup 0%
Labor cost to change oil $21.45

    Total bill to customer $203.92 * 7% sales tax = $218.19
    Total job costs: $183.45

    $203.92 - $183.45 = $20.47 Gross profit. That's about a 10% markup on the whole job!

Damn, talk about a tough business!!!

Re: Cost of doing business - the small business thread

Okay, glad to see this because I am in business too. Is that labor cost correct? Looks like about a gross cost of $53 hour (if the 1.5 hour brake job costs him $80). Factor in payroll taxes, workers comp, etc and thats still probably paying the mechanic over $40 hour. I guess that could be right if its a good mechanic, but around here they don't make anywhere near that unless they are a specialist like transmission, etc. Your cousin would probably be better off turning a wrench( if he's not already). $20 gross profit and the car is in his shop at least 2 hours. If he keeps that guy busy all day he's not making $80 day. He has to do a good volume at those prices to make a living.

Hell yeah its a tough business. Now you see why so many mechanical businesses have turned to lying to the customers and inventing things to fix. Your cousin tries to use quality parts, good mechanics, and has little to show for it. Factor in his overhead and he's not making hardly anything on that job. Shops are expensive to equip and run. The shops with no scruples will hire shade tree mechanics and pay them $15 hour, they'll use cheap parts, and run up the tab with bogus repairs.

I change my own oil now because I don't want anyone working on my car if they are not making money on it. Last oil change I paid for the guy left off the filler cap and the drain plug lacked about a quarter turn falling off. I pay more for the oil alone than most people pay for the whole oil change( synthetic) . But its just become the norm to charge $20-25 for an oil change.

I've always said I'd rather pay 50% more for an honest mechanic than half price for a dishonest one. 50% more of the repair you don't really need is still zero. That is really the question in the repair business. Is the mechanic honest? I long ago raised my rates to where I thought they needed to be and let the sheep shopping on price alone lead themselves to the slaughter. But I don't have the kind of overhead your cousin has.

now THIS has potential to be a VERY illuminating thread....

        no time now, more later.

        3 bux/qt for '10w30 Bulk motor oil' ?
and 6-7bux for an oil filter?
sounds like retail markup to me...
60bux for a set of brakepads? (snicker...)
and if the guy who actually does the work - even in joizy - is making 20/hour? (40grand/year) = 30bux for labor

and this is _precisely_ why i do as much of my own repairs as possible on my cars.

Talking about that, many parts online are counterfeits. I myself have purchased parts online and have found out the hard way they are not original parts made by their brand owners or by those under license.
