Traders in the New York Stock Exchange felt the shaking and shouted to each other, "Keep trading!"

Not fun, but no real damage (we think). Here in Reston, VA the house seriously shook, but everyone seems fine although I've got two stressed cats (and one stressed wife).

My parents live in Louisa (epicenter) in an old 250-year-old house on Lake Anna (near the nuke plant). I hear the plaster has cracks, some bricks off the chimney, but no obvious serious damage.

More as I hear it -- phones in the area are massively jammed.

        east coasters in an earthquake...

Sorry, that was mean. Fortunately the shallow ones tend to do less damage even at the same magnitude, but they are felt over a much wider area. Apparently that is even more pronounced on the eastern seaboard than the west due to differences in the underlying geology.

EDIT: actually, I uh, meant to say the exact opposite of what I said... yeah, that's the ticket. The shallow ones do more damage, if they're big enough.

          Not mean, funny.
Don't worry, we (North 'easters) make fun of everyone else's crazed reactions to snow....
Washington/NYC based media entities are treating it like the end of the world.

            Is that really the case?

In our recent/anecdotal experience the shallower the quake, the worse the impact on buildings, infrastructure, and the people smashed between them.

This quake looks to have caused little to no damage.....fortunately....but certainly fills the news cycle since so many people "have skin in the game" from having felt it.

Any aftershocks? I'm curious if this quake released a lot of geological stress and things will stay quiet for a long time, or if it's the beginning of more?

Am I already old enough to have a "senior moment"? You are correct. Doh, will edit post.

At least one aftershock so far.
Just 45 minutes after the initial quake, a 2.8 magnitude aftershock was reported five miles south-southwest of Mineral, according to USGS.

Mike Blanpied, USGS associate coordinator for the earthquake hazards program, says there could be more aftershocks any magnitude up to 5. “Aftershocks could go on for days, weeks, or even months. They’re most likely to be felt under the next three or four days,” Blanpied said.

Thanks, zoog. I guess we'll learn more over the next few weeks.

Apparently seismic stability in the U.S. was downgraded to AA+ by S&P.

DENVER — The largest natural earthquake in Colorado in more than a century struck Monday night in the state’s southeast corner, but there had been no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 and centered about nine miles from the city of Trinidad, hit at 11:46 p.m. local time. It was felt as far away as Greeley, about 350 miles north, and into Kansas and New Mexico, said Julie Dutton, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.
