First of all, hiking on hills and mountains when a thunderstorm is nearby is really, really stupid.
Secondly, there are all sorts of phenomena where electrical power is transmitted without a 'lightning bolt': note in this video you see (besides the normal lightning strike) an example of ball lightning.
Most likely all that happened was these guys were in a conducting path of humid air, but one which didn't have enough juice to actually fry them.
