I believe that store makes most of its money from cafes and al frescos that it sublets out. It is surrounded by a wealthy neighborhood of $2K-$4k a sq ft apartments.

another advantage for amazon lies in the reviews. if i'm shopping for a book, e.g. a travel guide, i find [some of] the reviews quite helpful in a way unavailable even if all the choices lay before me on a shelf in a bookstore. the same goes for reviews of other items, not just books.

I used to have a expensive hearing aid that I went swiming with and ruined it. My wife said she did not think I heard any better with it so I did not get a new one. I saw a hearing aid on Amazon for $179 with the best reviews I had seen for any product. I figured, why not try it. It is great and I have gotten several other friends to get them also. This alone would give me reason to use Amazon.

True, except in any areas where there is any controversy whatsoever.

But if you review all the reviews, most people can figure out the ones that are promoting something.

Astroturfing extends beyond just positive reviews for bad products.

There are also bad reviews for good products.

The point is increasing noise levels such that useful information cannot be obtained.

In my town Libraries are places where the cheapskates go to read magazines.

Actually, ours is not that bad. But the women there, nah. And the librarian's name tags should all say "Frumpy".

Whats the other big bookstore chain? Barnes and Noble? That place does a booming business near me. Packed every time I go in there. But they don't carry a fraction of what Amazon does. Amazon even carries a book by one of my customers. This is no joke, though I did laugh at first when he told me about it.
I thought he was making a joke.
