  • Mercatus Center video on Freedom in the 50 states

Have been long time reader appreciative of EJ's craftsmanship, and not felt moved to comment until watching this silly video.

Move from California to Arizona or Texas because of freedoms being restricted for "productive" individuals? Move from Google, Facebook, Apple, Santa Cruz, San Diego, LA, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, the Sierras, Mendocino county and the great central valley with the most productive farming in the world to what?

Anywhere you have lots of people you have a few jerks who ruin things by their lack of respect for common shared spaces, resources and activities. Regulations and rules protect us as communities from self centered spoilers of the commons like polluters of the air, water, public spaces, etc.

For a very long time California has attracted some of the most creative talent in the world in so many different fields...entertainment, science, technology, aeronautics, automotive design, and a whole host of other things. Over the decades the number of innovative companies that were spawned in California is quite amazing to this observer. I have pointed out a few such as Burt Rutan's Mojave-based Scaled Composites as examples of the type of unique enterprises that are virtually unknown anywhere else.

I really don't understand why this is the case, but I can't help but think that as the USA economy restructures for the future, California and the talent it attracts is still going to play a very important role in that process.
