This one hour video OK, Computer is Part 1 of the About the Rise of the Machines documentary series by Adam Curtis (BBC). From the intro "This is story about the rise of the machines and how they made us believe we could create a stable world that would last forever."

This episode presents the influence of Ayn Rand on a few early Silicon Valley pioneers, Greenspan, and the Collective which gave rise to their belief that networked computers could lead to stability and order in the economy that would liberate individuals from the political power of states and governments. It follows the economic boom of the Clinton years and the creation of the "new economy", the 1997 Asian crisis and rise of Robert Rubin, the rise of China funding our debt, ending with the 2008 crisis. Mostly it shows how the financial oligarchs are always bailed out sacrificing whatever societies are in their wake. Highly recommended!
