It's the constant race around the world for the cheapest resources. Hey maybe one day the US will be the cheapest once we're all living in cardboard boxes.

I knew a Chinese company that uses North Korean programmers/PhD scientists to do programming for some oil exploration sonar system, and they are even cheaper, and on top of that, they can't switch company or leak out company technology - he used an analogy, you can put them into your pocket.

I guess there will be a natural leveling out over the entire world, at least to some degree. For the US, it will be lower standard of living overall. For others, a higher one.

Economic borders are being knocked down. We are fast approaching a time where national distinctions are unnecessary. Corporate, social, and economic rank will become more important. Politicians, the famous, high level executives. These are the new aristocracy of the modern age. In the future people may not refer to themselves as American, Chinese, German, but rather as Worker, Unemployed, Executive, bureaucrat, or A list, B-list celebrity, etc. Not unlike multi-ethic Ancient Rome, where you were all technically Romans but referred to yourself as Slave, Senator, Soldier, etc. It mattered less where you were from.

This phenomena I'm sure fulfills the ideal political/economic fantasy of some. Those who crave a general "equality" among the majority, regardless of skills, education, etc, even if the net result is a lower standard of living. They are quite content that an elite few become fabulously wealthy and powerful, as long as MOST people are "equal".

Reminds me of the novel Jennifer Government. Everyone's last name is the company they work for, such as John Nike (the title character is an FBI agent, hence Government), or the sponsor of the school they attend (her daughter is Kate Mattel). Governments still exist but have limited power, global corporations effectively run the world. Obviously the novel is a satire, but as always, there are elements of truth.

That might be true in the US, but many Asian countries people are very proud of their own culture and tend to employ only their own race.

For example, many Chinese projects in Africa are done by Chinese workers brought over from China.

The same can be said of Indian software companies operating in the US and Europe. They will hire Indians even if Americans or Europeans are better and even cheaper.

Frequently, the executive that makes this decision is praised for the cost savings, then moves on/up to another division or company before the damage is apparent.

            Executive interests are short term.

Not unlike our politicians! The US is so short term oriented these days, I don't see much hope.

The Chinese especially dislike black people. I find it ironic that they were "left with" Africa to exploit (develop).

Flintlock, I think you are right. And, since there is nothing I can do about the major trend, I would like ensure my kids success in the future. I guess I must make sure they are indispensable to the A-list politicians & executives. In other words, they must learn to serve their masters well. It is depressing, but reality is what it is.

Add to this the families of low cost labor that still require assistance because they don't earn enough to support a family from cradle to grave. Current taxes are no longer high enough to pay for all this, so taxes are raised. Higher taxes make companies less competitive in the global market. Companies eventually move operations to countries with better tax treatment/lower costs. So now even more unemployment, with the corresponding higher taxes to pay for these additional people out of work. Rinse, wash, repeat. Eventually you don't have much of an economy remaining. Only stuff that can't be provided off shore remains to employ those lucky enough to still have a job. This is not a particularly good economic plan if you ask me.

This is a plan that eventually leads to world war.

This is why China is spending so much on their military, they are preparing for the coming war + cyberwar.

I've never known that the Chinese dislike black people, but I do know that there are some with opinions against South Asians.

this is a growing area and i would find it surprising to see many places cutting. i'm about to become a sales engineer for netezza, but i've spent 10 years consulting out of college, the most recent 4.5 in business intelligence/data warehousing. chicagoland area. around here it seems like there are many jobs available for local talent and offshore. the build i can trust offshore but the design rarely.

I did for them MSQLserver site, then they switched to Netezza, I did the migration, did all design and then they assigned it to Tata people.
This is one of the biggest car company in the world, and their IT 90% outsourced to India with Tata being the major.

I supplied software to one of the Tata offices in India, but i insisted on software rental and made sure the software expired when the rental is not renewed. From what I've observed the past year or so, their operation in India is incredibly bureaucratic, forms to fill up for almost every small matter, and everyone trying to push responsibility to the other guy. They had at least two or three people doing the same stuff - sort of watching over each other.

Once they passed me to their consultant based in their California office, also an Indian, he was quite good, I guess he worked in the US for sometime and learned how to do work fast. In time to come, he'll probably be sent back to India where he will service the same clients, albeit from India.

The wages of programmers and IT consultants in Singapore are a lot much lower than what you get in America, but even that, the Indians are replacing local people - Indian companies hire their own people, often bringing them from their offices in India.

And not only that, local companies that hire Indian managers often end up with entire departments of mostly Indians.
