1982 Dodge Diplomat Medallion (Chrysler) - rear wheel drive 318Ci (5.2L) - "Americas Police car". This car has been debadged but the amber front turn indicator gives it away
          Performance: top speed 175 km/h (109 mph) (theor.); accelerations 0- 60 mph 11.1 s (sim.); 0- 100 km/h 11.9 s (sim.); 0- 1/4 mile 18.3 s (sim.); Fuel consumption, mileage: official: , a-c pred. average combined: 19.1 l/100km / 14.8 mpg (imp.) / 12.3 mpg (U.S.) / 5.2 km/l
They were unbreakable with torsion bar front suspension

For 1982, the LeBaron moved to the front-wheel drive Chrysler K platform, where it became an upscale version of the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant

That explains WHY when Mickey R drives off the rear wheels spin!
We couldn't fathom how a FWD car could do that.

I loved the film, "Lightsleeper" is good as is "Drugstore Cowboy"......Films from the early 80's to early 90's ....after that they replaced acting & plot with CGI!

                    Blandmobile --

Yet today, 30 years on I have a diesel (turbocharger) that get 4x the economy, accelerates 2x as quick. it's intermediate gears run to 210 Klm/hr (130 m/hr) and runs out at 250Klm/hr (155m/hr) computer controlled, so I'm told . It has anti lock brakes that when pressed hard removes age wrinkles from your face. anti skid, anti yaw and more airbags than a breast augmentation clinic. It also has more torque than cranky wife and pulls like a 16year old boy with a tube of KY jelly,a playboy and a night light. It freaking talks to me, tells me where and what direction I should take and should i forget to service it, leave the keys in the ignition, the door open or try to exceed the laws of physics or inertia, some bloody computer will tell me or save me from myself.
I hate it but respect the technology.
Thank goodness I kept something for my sanity in the garage

PS: thats not me - Mine only comes out to play on race tracks - but sweet mother it hauls ass - one of 200 built by Australian racing legend Peter Brock

I just bought a new car for the wife for the first time in 14 years. Amazing how good cars are today. We passed on the turbo model because of future teen drivers, but it has a 270 hp 2.0 liter turbocharged engine, gets 22 city/33 mpg hwy, and can be bought for under $24,000. All backed by a 100k mile warranty and loaded with all the bells and whistles you can imagine.

I think this car has the potential to be a huge hit: 2012 Passat

A large car that supposedly will get 31 city/ 43 hwy and not require batteries!

I just watched the video clip. That was filmed at Camel Rock, NM, just north of Santa Fe. I used to drive past it every day.

The VW diesel looks appealing but it's more than I can afford and I hear nightmare stories about VW quality, or lack of.

                        I'm looking at a 2012 Hyundai Accent 5-door hatchback, 40 mpg hwy.

I wish it came with a diesel engine. They have little diesel compact cars in Europe but will we ever get them in the U.S.? If I wait a year will there be more diesel options available?

Re: Do you know your cars?

Shiny! -KIA/Hyundai (sister companies) quality is approaching world class. The fittings and the bells and whistles they provide is astonishing. Toyota/mazda/Nissan are in for a shock. Honda needs to harden up. BMW and Mercedes have nothing really over them except a $30,000 bonnet badge
Why are Diesels not popular in the US. Higher compression ratios mean 30% less fuel usage. Diesel is cheap to make and a properly serviced engine will outlast a petrol motor by a considerable margin (lower revs / higher torque ).they use a lot less fuel idling in stop/start traffic and I love them for long distance/high speed work - they are effortless ticking over at 1800rpm at 80mph where the max grunt is.

I don't know why they aren't more popular here. Regulations? Ignorance? But the fact is, there isn't much choice available, and no diesels approaching the low price tag of the Hyundai Accent.

Yes, the VW reliability thing is one reason why I didn't wait for a 2012 Passat. Even Jetta diesels are selling at retail now. And I figured it would be mid 2012 before prices settled down on the new Passat. My fear of being stuck with a 13 mpg dinosaur if gas goes to $5 gallon helped push me into the Sonata now vs waiting. That said, their diesel is supposedly pretty bullet proof. Its the gas engines and other issues they have if I'm not mistaken.
