  • Network - still mad as hell 35 years later

“If you put it in your DVD player today you’ll feel like it was written last week,” Mr. Sorkin said. “The commoditization of the news and the devaluing of truth are just a part of our way of life now. You wish Chayefsky could come back to life long enough to write ‘The Internet.’ ”

“No predictor of the future — not even Orwell — has ever been as right as Chayefsky was when he wrote ‘Network.’

Great treatment, along with The Hospital (George C. Scott's monologue, spoken to a delicious Diana Riggs, is a gem), that continue to deliver Chayefsky's take on our fall into the abyss.

Unfortunately I have read reviews that the DVD versions available of both are equally abysmal transfers. Maybe Criterion will provide releases worthy of the material.

Wow don, you have a knack for picking "gems".

Scott was one of the few actors on the screen who when I was in my twenties gave me the feeling of a better future through the medium of film. Sounds nuts today to me but that was how felt then. Today seeing stars like B. Stiller makes me want to change the channel to Cesar Millan and a Heineken beer.

Diana Riggs was pure sex without needing her to say anything. ;-)

There is some strange synchronicity with this movie. A blogger mentioned public suicides and as an example used Christine Chubbuck. Being the curious I went to see who this was. Then a documentary about her was mention and .... and the film "Network" is right in the middle of it all.

        Weird stuff.
