  • Walmart CEO: customers running out of money earlier

    http://money.cnn.com/2011/04/27/news...sure/index.htm

Wal-Mart's core shoppers are running out of money much faster than a year ago due to rising gasoline prices, and the retail giant is worried, CEO Mike Duke said Wednesday."We're seeing core consumers under a lot of pressure," Duke said at an event in New York. "There's no doubt that rising fuel prices are having an impact."

Wal-Mart shoppers, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, typically shop in bulk at the beginning of the month when their paychecks come in.

Lately, they're "running out of money" at a faster clip, he said.

"Purchases are really dropping off by the end of the month even more than last year," Duke said. "This end-of-month [purchases] cycle is growing to be a concern.

Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), which averages 140 million shoppers weekly to its stores in the United States, is considered a barometer of the health of the consumer and the economy.

To that end, Duke said he's not seeing signs of a recovery yet.

With food prices rising, Duke said Wal-Mart is charging customers more for some fresh groceries while reducing prices on other merchandise such as electronics.

Wal-Mart has struggled with seven straight quarters of sales declines in its stores.
While this looks like part of an orchestrated media strategy, the comment does raise a good point:

Increases in food and energy prices don't really affect those who have money nearly as much as those who do not.

Well, duh right? Not exactly. A middle class family has the resources to ramp down into a more fuel efficient car, or to switch to cheaper foods.

A poor family can't afford to switch out their used Corolla for a hybrid diesel, and they already don't buy arugula.

walmart has reported the same pattern for some time [it's been posted and discussed before]. i take this latest to mean that the trend has continued to decline; the squeeze continues to tighten. cmi's chart of discretionary internet purchases shows a similar pattern of continued deterioration. note in the chart below that this is a graph of the RATE of decline, not of absolute purchases. so the decline is actually ACCELERATING.

It is logical and consistent if the pressure on spending is due to high gasoline/energy prices. Certainly gasoline prices are accelerating up.

and my biz continues to illustrate the 'canary in the coalmine' perfectly: the boat repair biz is still pointed DOWN, even if that is somewhat related to recent legislative activity that proposes to price the current marina tenants (most all working/middle class) out of the game completely, thus leading directly to hesitation on the part of the client base to spend any money at all on their boats - so if it isnt the price of diesel fuel doing it, its the phreakin political antics - as they desparately thrash about, looking for any 'solution' to their deficits, while making no effort whatsoever to slash headcounts in the buracracy!

Very true. Just one more reason why constant inflation should not be an acceptable outcome of monetary policy, let alone an actual goal of it.

Is it safe to assume this is people on food "stamps", WIC, welfare? Most low wage workers don't get paid on a monthly basis so I it seems strange they would run out of money at that time. Walmarts vary greatly by location but in some areas it is astonishing the % of people using some form of government assistance.

I can't help but think of the Thatcher quote about socialists eventually running out of other people's money. Apparently that time comes every month now.

Also makes me wonder how much lobbying is done by Walmart to increase food stamp payments. Probably in the name of "helping people".

I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon (probably at least once a week, just bought some batteries an hour ago), but if I was Walmart's CEO I would also lobby to have sales tax on internet sales.

As a preface: the government wastes way too much of my money as is and I don't support them taking more or having better enforcement.

The online sales tax is a very interesting issue. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that I'm already required by law to pay sales (or "use) tax on online purchases. The only "loophole" has to do with the collection of sales tax and enforcement of the law against individuals.

I'm guessing that the majority of Americans are guilty of this form of tax evasion every year.

I also don't understand the logic of why online purchases shouldn't be taxed other than what I said in my preface. I sense that most people are against changing the law, but the same people don't seem to care about existing sales tax.

Gotta love the irony...Walmart spearheading the "Alliance for Main Street Fairness."
