California employers created an estimated 96,500 non-farm jobs in February. Or did they?
That number, reported by the Employment Development Department on Friday, represented half of all jobs created nationwide last month and was the largest month-to-month gain since 1990, the earliest date comparable statistics are available.
"That's an outrageously good number," says Paul Wessen, a labor market economist for the department. Whether it holds up remains to be seen.
Last month, EDD initially reported that California had created 12,500 jobs in January, which would have been about one-third of the 36,000 jobs created nationwide.
But the state later revised its estimate downward to a mere 700 jobs.
