Re: Obama's "Short, Victorious War"...or not. WaPo editorial blasts Obama
What happens within "The Family" is one thing.
But when it comes to the affairs of other "nations" [or Families] nobody wants to be seen crossing that boundary, unless invited in [as selected GCC military and police were invited into Bahrain two weeks ago].
I think this mostly stems from the fact that there is a great sensitivity, particularly within Sunni Islam, that these countries are all artificial constructs created by the English and French after they defeated the last of the great Muslim empires, the Ottoman sultanate, in 1918. The end of the thirteen century old caliphate replaced a powerful symbol of Muslim unity with partitioned territories across the Levant and a bunch of sheikdoms across the "barren wasteland" of the Arabian peninsula. Initially the Crescent was divided into British ruled Iraq and Palestine and French ruled Syria. The Brits later partitioned Jordan [orginally Transjordan] out of Palestine, and the French did the same with Syria, carving out Lebanon.
And we wonder why so many Muslims find appeal in bin Laden's message that these Arab rulers are not legitmate, that this is a war between Islam and the Western infidels, and there remain deep territorial and tribal sensitivities within the region to this day...

Reports: Coup in Qatar Aborted
Mar 1 2011, 02:15 PM
Sabq- An attempted military coup in Qatar was aborted last week, reports said. Sheikh Hamed Ben Khalifa, Emir of Qatar, has successfully managed to foil the trial to topple his regime.
Sources close to the Qatari opposition abroad said "A number of Qatari senior military officers attempted a failed coup d'état last Thursday", Egyptian daily AlWafd reported, quoting Algerian daily 'Alnahar'.
"30 military officers were detained and 16 members of Aal Thani ruling family were put under house arrest," the anonymous sources added.
The sources pointed out that Qatari Army Chief of Staff , Major General Hamad bin Ali Al Attiyah led the failed coup.
The Emir's approval to host the US military base of "Aideed", the policy of rapprochement with Israel and secret visits exchanged with Israeli officials were among the most important causes that led to the aborted coup, the sources added.
Added to the aforementioned causes of the failed coup was a leaked video showing Prince Hamad filming the process of loading US aircraft, at Qatari bases, of white phosphorus bombs, ammunition and military equipment, and the establishment of an air-bridge between Doha and Tel Aviv, during the last aggression on the Gaza Strip.
