Pretty awesome, can they manufacture all that stuff without oil?

And when do I get the jet-pack they've been promising me?

It's good to know that concepts will flow over varied surfaces, but little girls will always be in unattainably, cherry-blossum short, uniform jumpers.

Corning's wet dream. Some of this will come to pass I'm sure. Ultimately the display surfaces and inputs will become somewhat superfluous IMO. Augmented reality is where it's at baby.

It's also always funny to see how everything just runs without a hitch in these videos. I would be happy with video conferencing solutions that just plain WORKS for gods sake. glitchy, hard to set up crap still after 10+ years.

I already want to scream every time my cell phone rings... so the last thing I want is someone bugging me via my own bathroom mirror while I'm shaving ...

            Thanks Corning.

Regarding Jet Packs, I thought this seemed convincing:

cool video mm... can't wait (although it will take some time imo)!

did you all notice that the guy wakes up on the left side of the bed and then goes to sleep on the right side? i don't know of any couple that doesn't have a "their side."

also, they all seem to be talking to people on these glass surfaces - e.g. granny on the kitchen counter - but how does she see them? i didn't see a camera on any of the fancy glass phones or counters.

Hmmm....someone's going to need an awful lot of glass cleaner.

I see large possibilities for these technologies, both for the good and for the bad, as allways.

Although not directly related with glass displays, a machine calling you by your name strikes me as sinister. In my opinion, this tries to diminish the human being and dull his feelings. We shouldn't accept this.

On the other hand, I welcome the possibility of having large glass displays inside a home. You can see beautiful landscapes (instead of the horrible building that perhaps is directly in front of your window), which will help your emotional system and help you feel better. You can also have your own private museum with the best pictures by Velazquez, Van Gogh, etc. if that is your wish, etc.

Ordinary float glass uses quite a bit of energy to manufacture. Most likely not a huge part of the price of a flat screen TV, but I expect architectural glass to skyrocket soon.

"Why the Future Doesn't Need Us"

"In the book, you don't discover until you turn the page that the author of this passage is Theodore Kaczynski - the Unabomber. I am no apologist for Kaczynski. His bombs killed three people during a 17-year terror campaign and wounded many others. One of his bombs gravely injured my friend David Gelernter, one of the most brilliant and visionary computer scientists of our time. Like many of my colleagues, I felt that I could easily have been the Unabomber's next target.

Kaczynski's actions were murderous and, in my view, criminally insane. He is clearly a Luddite, but simply saying this does not dismiss his argument; as difficult as it is for me to acknowledge, I saw some merit in the reasoning in this single passage. I felt compelled to confront it. "

                        A couple of thoughts...
                        • A glass cell phone seems like a great idea until you drop it.
                        • The glass displays are the easy part. I'd like to get some of that software they were using! All that advanced gesture recognition, embedded seamless videos, etc. etc.
                        • I see that, other than electronic scribblings on the fridge, graffiti on bus stops is oh-so-twentieth-century.

didn't notice the bed side switcheroo... hilarious.

i also wondered where the cameras are... in the kitchen counter top? aimed where? in the bathroom mirror?

                            good point...

ever seen an ipad that wasn't covered in greasy fingerprints?

corning's vision is for greasy fingerprints all over your counter tops, mirrors & refrigerator... or the setup comes with a few hundred bags of these...

I'm an aerospace engineer who started with punch cards and line printers and went through too many information and engineering "paradigm shifts" to count. Glass screens, bigger databases, and talking interfaces are all well and good, but below is the sci-fi story about what I think the "end game" is for the human race. If we get to this level of technology, we will simply stop living and starve to death thinking we're at a feast; and stop reproducing while we think we're screwing every hour...
