Markets will fluctuate. You can read the Bullish and Bearish information threads and see what a few "pundits" opined over the past few days.

Personally, I think the markets will be up next week, but that is just a wild-assed guess.

The credit that the Fed made available Friday is due to be paid off Monday.

So unless the Fed makes fresh loans, I expect the market to go down.

The Friday bailout was an attempt by the fed to prevent a Friday (worst day of the week) meltdown. I am presuming that the Fed hopes that the weekend allowed some banks to figure out where to get the cash (in other words- which assets to liquidate) to pay off the debts that are due.

See Sapiens thread "Banks are bankrupt, Lenders of last resort act!"

According to the yen value indicator, market is in for a rough time Monday.

Yen dropped from 118-ish to low 117 after the US market closed.

Definitely a carry trade unwind; if the liquidity from the CBs had really made that much of an impact - I would have thought the yen/dollar would have held steady.

I don't see a major drop though - unless another shoe drops (i.e. Japanese bank says they have major losses related to MBS/CDOs).

If that happens, say SMBC, then I predict a 1987 style 10% to 20% drop across the board.

You heard it here first

            c1ue,

After the markets close in NY on Friday, what is open where one can see how the yen is doing before Australian and Asian markets open?

Oh, and what does "SMBC" mean?

              Jim,

As part of the export business from Japan to Russia, I use a service in Oakland for the currency transactions.

That's where I can get the quotes, but you can even use Yahoo Finance.

As for SMBC - Sumitomo Mitsui Bank Corporation, the 2nd largest bank in Japan - the Japan equivalent of BNP Paribas in terms of bond strategies, etc.

JPY trading after hours has no meaning whatsoever. Now it went above 118:

There is so much negative emotions in the market that it will go up, big time in the next couple of weeks or months. Tomorrow, hard to tell.
Lets not forget we had nice market runs after the 1987 or 1998 crunches of liquidity. Gloom is the best buying opportunity.
