    in the case of The US: isnt that just 'conventional' calculation of reserves?
    (with 'conventional' having mostly political restraints on potential reserves)

      What's the definition of "proven reserves"?

      Who defines the definition?

        The definition is well known, but the implementation is subject to much human fallibility/enemy action.

        While I'm not a conspiracy theorist, the comment I saw somewhere that OPEC members' voting rights are proportional to their 'proven reserves' creates an incentive to falsify.

        If true, this is a disturbing sign.
