  • Common Fallacies

I found this handy tutorial that describes and gives examples of over forty types of fallacies (flawed reasoning) used in arguments and propaganda.

    http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/

I think most of us are guilty of unintenionally using fallacies from time to time. Politicians and Madison Avenue use them intentionally. I'm posting this here because:

    1. I find it fascinating and want to learn how to be more logical and accurate in my thinking.

    2. When it comes to what the MSM puts out, pretty much everything besides the punctuation is fallacious.

    3. As we get more of our news from blogs, it's important to be able to spot fallacious reasoning used to promote the bloggers' assertions.

    4. There have been a few discussions here lately that have devolved into argumentative "ping-pong" because of fallacious reasoning.

Fallacious arguments can be pretty crazy-making if you don't understand what's happening. Armed with this information, rational people can simply say something like, "Fallacy #36" and move on ;-)

(Fred, please move this to Rant and Rave if you feel it isn't right for this forum. Thanks.)

Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.
