When I was in elementary school in the 60's, I remember learning how bad people had it in the Soviet Union because they had no freedom:

- They were spied upon by their government.
- People were encouraged to turn in their neighbors.
- It was not safe to dissent.
- They could be arrested and held without trial.
- Their Press was controlled by the government and only told them what the government wanted them to know.
- They could not travel without government permission, and they had to show their papers in order to travel.
We are there.
