  • Next short: Insurance companies

    Great article on Bloomberg:

The backlash and the class action suits will come, and they will all have to pay - dearly. Both retroactively and in future profits.

Watch for it, it'll be a great short.

Maybe short term but I'm not so sure how this all plays out. Federal Court ruled Katrina an act of God and the insurance companies got off the hook. I'm not sure how you can have flood insurance, have a flood and the insurance company doesn't have to pay, but apparently that's what happened. I can't imagine Federal Courts don't view fire as an act of God. Actually anything can be viewed as an act of God or better still an act of war, so this should be interesting to see how far the Fundies take it. Watching how they make God pay for this I'm sure will be interesting, I get the feeling God's costs will come out of public pockets not private profits.

given the diminishing returns shorting HB's, and my new target is commercial REITs.

Far easier to stick with whats working than trying to call a top.

Do not just look at the insurance companies. The title companies are going to be a prime juicy target and the property and casualty insurers are also, IMHO. The property and casualty boys do not want to talk about it but almost all of them are heavily into the purchase of the high yield, high risk hedge funds which are being trashed thanks to the imploding CDO circus ongoing now.

Don't limit yourself, but be patient.....

They just tried squeezing me for a 30% increase on my homeowners, with no claims ever. Now, I just found this out; if you call your agent and talk about a prospective claim it gets put on your file; also when you go to change your coverage that policy number will be referenced by the prospective new company. It allows the previous company to " talk " to the old company and compare what you told them.

            Bastards

They make a mint off car insurance and then make bad investments and want us to pay for them

            Typical capitialist pig bullshit

              Spunky,

41 years ago I went into Navy as a dentist and one of the first things I did was to change my auto insurance to USAA in San Antonio, TX--a car was all I and bank owned. At that time it offered insurance to military officers. Over the years I believe it has broadened coverage to anyone who was ever on active duty--I wouldn't stake my life on that, but I believe it is correct. I think USAA is probably the best insurance company in the world. Over the years I have had some claims, and it still beat the dickens out of any thing I have ever considered. It is the only company with which I have done business that I never felt was taking advantage of me at some point.

In my opinion, anyone eligible to do business with USAA probably should have them as his/her insuror. You can find it on web at USAA.com. Check it out.
