Re: Congressman Giffords (D-AZ), 11 others shot at Tucson area political event

What are the chances that we will hear about the 2nd and 3rd suspects once the FBI is involved?

A second man was arrested several hours later and police said they were hunting a third.

Re: Congressman Giffords (D-AZ), 11 others shot at Tucson area political event

Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik offered an emotional, angry assessment of the state of America in the wake of the shootings in Arizona, saying that two of his close friends -- Ms. Giffords and Judge John Roll - were among the victims.

Mr. Dupnik called the shooting a "very sad day for Tucson" and a "horrendous, horrendous, senseless, unbelievable crime." And then he blamed the crime on the rhetoric -- presumably political rhetoric -- in the country.

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government," he said. "The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on this country is getting to be outrageous and unfortunately Arizona has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

Mr. Dupnik said it is time for the country to "do a little soul searching."

He added: "The vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business ... This has not become the nice United States that most of us grew up in."

Later, he said: "It's not unusual for all public officials to get threats constantly, myself included. That's the sad thing about what's going on in America: pretty soon we're not going to be able to find reasonable decent people willing to subject themselves to serve in public office."

perhaps you're right. we'll know more when and if the 2nd suspect is found [if he indeed exists]. my reaction may be a product of my own dismay at the political climate [note my signature] as well as my horror at these particular shootings. ever seen brain surgery, or spent any time with people with significant brain injuries? and a third grade girl!

2-3 years ago, a disgruntled right-wing wingnut ranted that liberals were destroying America (he was a fan of right wing talk radio) and shot up a a Unitarian church in Tennessee during Sunday morning service. Several people were killed and even more injured.

It happened during a play that the children were putting on in the church sanctuary. Unitarians, of course, have the reputation of being the most liberal church denomination in the U.S.

It's almost like we're living through the inverse of the 1970's. Then there were groups of left-wing anarchists hated the government, wanted a revolution, and and were willing to blow some buildings up if necessary.

Now the the left is quiet and well-behaved, while the nutjobs who spew violence and their hatred for the government seem to reside mostly on the far right.

Yes, but I don't remember anyone accusing the democrats of incitement because of Hinckley. The comment sections of major news outlets have been surprisingly vicious. It is like the plebes vs the boni all over again.

Left, right, yesterdays revolutionary is often tomorrows dictator. These types don't mind fascism so long as they give the orders. Their true political party is control and in this context the Communist Manifesto, Mein Kampf and Brave New World are completely consistent. It reminds me of a short film called Ah Pook I saw years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV0cES95kVU

Forgive the youtube link, I just googled it and grabbed the first one.

That is a thoroughly reprehensible remark, as if another bombing will achieve anything. What Obama needs to do is LEAD.
