Chief Richard Kastigar with the Pima County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that 12 people were shot at a Gabrielle Gifffords event. The shooting occurred this morning at a Safeway Store near Oracle & Ina.

Gabrielle Giffords was shot. Her condition has not been disclosed by authorities. One shooter is in custody, authorities said.

That's terrible. ABC News reports that she was shot point blank in the head, but a hospital spokesperson said she is alive. Other news reports say she is dead.

At a news conference several hours later, an official with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said that six people had been killed and 18 wounded in the shooting. Among the six dead was a child,

Witnesses said Ms. Giffords was speaking to constituents when a man ran up and began firing. He then tried to escape on foot but was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody by the police.

“I saw the congresswoman talking to two people, and then this man suddenly came up and shot her in the head and then shot other people,” said Dr. Steven Rayle, a witness to the shootings and a former emergency room doctor who now works at a hospice. “I think it was a semiautomatic, and he must have got off 20 rounds.”

Dr. Rayle said that Ms. Giffords slumped to the ground and that staff members immediately rushed to her aid. “A staffer had his arm around her, and she was leaning against the window of the Safeway. He had a jacket or towel on her head,” the doctor said.

Last March, after the final approval of the Democrats’ health care law, which Ms. Giffords supported, the windows of her office in Tucson were broken or shot out in an act of vandalism. Similar acts were reported by other members of Congress, and several arrests were made, including that of a man who had threatened to kill Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington.

And in August 2009, when there were demonstrations against the health care measure across the nation, a protester who showed up to meet Ms. Giffords at a supermarket event similar to Saturday’s was removed by the police when the pistol he had holstered under his armpit fell and bounced on the floor.

During the fall campaign, Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential candidate, posted a controversial map on her Facebook page depicting spots where Democrats were running for re-election; those Democrats were noted by crosshairs symbols like those seen through the scope of a gun. Ms. Giffords was among those on Ms. Palin’s map.

as i said, this incident will be written off as the act of a nut case, but i think it is a symptom of the deteriorating political climate in this country.

The event was very informal: Gifford had set up a table outside the Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman, who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford in the head first. According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor, Gifford was able to move her hands after being shot.

After shooting Gifford, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a few seconds, hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than 10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead. When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee, but a member of Gifford's staff tackled him. The Rayle helped hold him down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-or 20 minutes later. 30 minutes later the EMS came. Rayle said he was "stunned" by how long it took medical help to arrive.

That's a suspiciously long response time for a mass shooting, especially of a political figure. Something about the response doesn't smell right. Almost as if a hit was ordered.

Giffords is married to Mark Kelly, an astronaut who was the commander of the Endeavour, the final planned mission of the American space shuttle programme, and a veteran of the first Gulf War. She served as chairwoman of the House Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee and also holds seats on the House Science and Technology and Armed Services committees.


Giffords was the first Jewish woman elected to Congress from Arizona, the third female ever to be elected for that state.

I would agree we are in a deteriorating climate, but I reckon we are still a long, long way off from the Weathermen, Baader Meinhof, Red Army Faction, Red Brigade, SLA, and crazy crazy Greeks of the 1970's.

I figure the Europeans kick off first and longest in the wealthy west.....a bit of a repeat of the 70's maybe?

I'm talking the domestic, home grown stuff....not the Middle Eastern spillover attacks that occurred in the 80's.
