Actually, the US has been pumping more water from the aquifiers than naturally is replenished. Current US agriculture is on an unsustainable path (especially areas in California and the Mid-West). There are plenty of recent publications on this subject.
also, I doubt very much that using crops for bio-ethanol is anything other than a hidden subsidy for the farmers. Afaik, crops like maize require more extra oil input than it produces in energy output. Since the US imports a lot of its oil, I would like to see what the trade balance is if you take this into account (in addition to the artificial scarcity of food crops).
