  • Here Comes QE3...

...just in time to take your mind off QE2.

You have to hand it to the Brits. Nobody does posh the way they do. Nor eccentric afternoon lawn games either. Tea anyone...
First Look at Queen Elizabeth Liner

    Oct 11th 2010 04:06 AM

A cruise on Cunard is about tradition. The 170-year-old ship line is smart enough to know that, so for its newest ship, Queen Elizabeth, it's gone for a retro flashback. AOL Travel News was among the first to see the ship, even before its official launch by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

Décor on the 90,400-ton ship is Art Deco-influenced in homage to the original 1938 Queen Elizabeth.

The new ship also brings back a lot of the elegance that made the subsequent 1969 Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) – which retired two years ago – the most famous ocean liner in the world...

...Cunard President Peter Shanks couldn't help poking fun at this aspect when discussing the Queen Elizabeth's introduction of a Games Deck, a lovely new park-like area (though with fake grass and bushes) on top of the ship, with greens for croquet and British lawn bowling, as well as paddle tennis courts and wooden benches for watching.

"We are looking forward to our American colleagues playing English garden bowls," Shanks laughed as he told a group of American journalists, explaining the game uses balls weighted on one side and is not easy...

Cunard's new Queen Elizabeth cruise ship prepares to hit the waves

The luxury £365m liner buzzes with activity as the final preparations are made ahead of her launch tomorrow

The most apropos quote ever, "At over 225,000 tons and capable of accommodating nearly 6,300 passengers, serviced by 2,165 crewmembers, the Oasis is the size of five Titanics."

Here is the grass on a Celebrity Solstice Class ship, at 122000 tons about 30,000 tons bigger than the QE3. BTW that is real grass!

In my travels the past 4 weeks in Germany, the Persian Gulf and Hong Kong I see little evidence of the global financial crisis at the top end of the market. The first and business class sections of the airplanes are full, the best hotels have no vacancies, and just try to get a reservation in a good restaurant on short notice. The bifurcation of the global economy is well underway...it's not just the USA that is experiencing significant and growing wealth disparity.

We just came back from a 12 day cruise from Athens to Turkey, Israel and Egpyt on Holland America. The ship was essentially full. We have booked a cruise in February from Port Canaveral on the Norwegian Sun. That ship is almost fully booked already. But on our recent cruises, it looks like the mix of passengers is still much like it was prior to the financial crisis. However, I have noticed that there are some real bargins on QE3's big sister, QM2 on parts of its around the world cruise which in the past has been mostly fully booked.

Must call my buddy who was Chief Officer on QE2 and see what he thinks of it.
