  • Investment ideas in Oct 2010

I just wanted to pick the brain of iTulipers who are smarter than most people, for investment ideas based on current/future political and economic situation in USA and around the world.

    Please provide your inputs.

I am thinking of buying a primary home, even mulling to pull trigger to buy multi-family( though the cap rates are very low for good property/locations).

I am still dollar cos averaging to Gold. Last purchase was at $1200. will continue doing it.

I am long S&P in family 401k since around 1070. I hope to keep it till end of year 2010, after which tax rates - individual/capital gains tax is going up.

I like farmland and live surrounding farms, but don't know farming. so avoiding that. I have IRA in DBA/CEF/GTU. Plans to add MOO.

I am not buying indexes, but very carefully selected stocks. Several good long-term stocks (I hope) get beaten down for no real reason in this market. There *are* opportunities, but you have to look hard. I view the general indexes as dangerous and open to manipulation. I'll probably accelerate stock buys once I see EJ's picks (I'm keeping a fair amount of liquidity in preparation for that).

Bought gold, energy, health (not so convinced on that one, but the wife insisted) recently. Have several agri stocks, gold positions from physical to GLD (trading gold in 401K)

We already own a house. In my area (DC) land is still overpriced IMO. We bought well before the bubble, so no concerns there.

Still have too much cash IMO, so really looking for homes for that.

I'm mostly Gold and Energy, with a few individual stocks like Jpatter666. Very small agri position.( which has not done well!) I'd be wary of index funds also. I think the overall trend will be stocks down or flat. Only the best in their fields will thrive in this environment.

Buying a house could be your best play if you don't overbuy and be conservative. And won't need to sell anytime soon. Low rates make this a potential play on inflation. Just buy the cheapest home you can live with in a nice neighborhood and don't look for appreciation. Think of it as locking in cheap rent for 30 years.

I will: 1. Wait until EJs article comes out next month before buying anything new and maybe not even then, depending on what he says. 2. Increase gold position if there is a nice dip 3. Continue to divest myself of non/poor dividend stocks opportunistically 4. Continue to hold Potash as the takeover plays out 5. Continue to increase my cash and cash-equivalents position (if possible) so I have a nice "war chest" when opportunity finally arrives 6. Continue to hold my battered, year-old S&P short ETF position. 7. Exercise extreme patience and try not to fall into the psycho-emotional traps investors commonly fall into. Be a friggin' cold-ass Vulcan about this stuff.
