David Zirin’s Bad Sports (as in "poor sports") is a good read. It’s a 200-page indictment of the current crop of team owners and their pervasive attempts to extort taxpayer money from states/municipalities, claiming new stadiums lead to job creation and economic rebound while every study and almost every example says NOT.
It’s a hoot. From the Redskins selling warm 8-dollar Coors Lites in their restrooms, to Tom Hicks of Texas getting his comeuppance after buying Liverpool FC. The "faith nights" at stadiums are eye opening. I always knew Bud Selig was a turdball, but Zirin takes down Stern and the NHL too. No wonder I can't name a pro ball player. Curt Flood, where are you?
Chapters focus on Dan Snyder, Donald Sterling, David Glass, James Dolan, and Henry Paulson. (He and his son are owners of Portland teams)
Here’s a truncated quote:
Granted, Philadelphia fans are a breed apart. At an Eagles game in the late 60’s they booed Santa Claus just prior to Christmas day. It’s not an urban legend. “He had it coming,” said one fan. Philadelphia fans booed the children of Philadelphia baseball players who couldn’t find Easter eggs hidden in the outfield. When Sarah Palin decided to skate to center ice to dropped the puck for the opening Flyers game, the boos were deafening. Palin, who had been warned about the tough crowd, brought along her seven year old daughter dressed in a Flyer’s jersey. Palin thought no one would dare boo her Piper. Phillie fans dared.
